AUSTIN, Texas —

University of Texas swimmer Dave Walters set an American record in the 200-yard freestyle at the Texas Invitational swim meet in Austin, breaking the record set by Michael Phelps.

Walters finished the event Friday with a time of 1 minute, 31.83 seconds.

Texas said Phelps set the record on March 3, 2006, with a time of 1:32.08 at the same pool.

Phelps won a record-setting eight Olympic golds at the Beijing Games.

Walters, a 2008 Olympic gold medalist in the 800-meter freestyle relay, also holds a share of the American record in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
