American Davis wins 1000m speedskating event

Shani Davis of the United States won the 1,000 meters Sunday at a World Cup speedskating meet.

HEERENVEEN, Netherlands —

Shani Davis of the United States won the 1,000 meters Sunday at a World Cup speedskating meet.

Davis, who also won the 1,500 on Friday, finished in 1 minute, 08.99 seconds. Pekka Koskela of Finland was second in 1:09.05 and Simon Kuipers of the Netherlands was third in 1:09.26.

Davis leads the overall standings with 180 points, followed by Stefan Groothuis of the Netherlands at 145 and Kuipers at 140.

Christine Nesbitt and Kristina Groves of Canada claimed the 1,000 gold and silver, respectively.

Nesbitt won in 1 minute, 16.18 seconds, while Groves finished 0.58 behind. Wang Beixing of China was third in 1:17.01.

Nesbitt leads the overall standings with 200 points.
