American, South African set swim records

American swimmer Peter Marshall and South African Cameron van der Burgh set world records Tuesday at a World Cup short course meet.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden —

American swimmer Peter Marshall and South African Cameron van der Burgh set world records Tuesday at a World Cup short course meet.

Marshall won the 100-meter backstroke in 49.94 seconds, breaking Ryan Lochte's record of 49.99 set in 2006. American Randall Bal was second in 50.30.

Van der Burgh broke his own 50-meter breaststroke record by winning in 25.94. He is the first man to swim the 50-meter breaststroke in under 26 seconds.

Vladislav Polyakov of Kazakhstan was second in 26.72.

Van der Burgh broke the record Saturday at the World Cup in Moscow, becoming the first African man to hold a breaststroke record. Oleg Lisogor of Ukraine had held the record for nearly three years.

He partly credited new starting blocks, with an extra elevated part on the back, for the new record.

"It helped me to come under 26 seconds. It feels incredible to be the first to have managed 26 seconds," he told Swedish television.
