Hip injury forces Paterno to coach from press box

For the first time this season Joe Paterno wasn't on the Penn State sideline at kickoff, opting to coach from the press box Saturday against Purdue because of a lingering right hip injury.
The 81-year-old Paterno was hurt while performing an onside kick during practice on Aug. 28.
"He just has a leg problem that has been causing him pain for the last several weeks or so," Penn State spokesman Jeff Nelson said. "He kind of plays it from week to week."
Paterno coached the second half of the win over Temple on Sept. 20 from the press box.
Paterno's left leg was broken and knee ligaments were torn in November 2006 when he was hit on the sideline during a game at Wisconsin. He was forced to miss a game and then had to coach the Outback Bowl in a coaching box above the field.
