Sabres' RW Pominville signs 5-year extension

Forward Jason Pominville signed a five-year contract extension with the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday, a day before the team opens training camp.

BUFFALO, N.Y. —

Forward Jason Pominville signed a five-year contract extension with the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday, a day before the team opens training camp.

Pominville, entering the final year of his contract, finished second on the team with a career-best 80 points (27 goals, 53 assists) last season and was identified as one of two core players the Sabres wanted to secure with long-term deals this offseason. The other was goaltender Ryan Miller, who signed a five-year, $31.25 million extension in July.

Pominville emerged as a team leader last season after the Sabres lost co-captains Chris Drury and Daniel Briere to free agency. In three full NHL seasons, Pominville has 79 goals and 99 assists for 178 points in 222 career games.

Terms of the deal were not immediately available.
