Luthi injures thumb in crash at Indy
Thomas Luthi of Switzerland avoided serious injuries in a crash during practice Saturday in the 250cc class at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Thomas Luthi of Switzerland avoided serious injuries in a crash during practice Saturday in the 250cc class at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The 22-year-old rider, who competes for the Emmi-Caffe Latte team, got too high exiting the 11th turn, flipped over the handle bars, landed hard on his back and struck his head on the asphalt. He did not appear to move on the track before being placed on a backboard, lifted onto a stretcher and taken away in an ambulance.
X-rays later showed no head injuries, although there was a possibility he might need surgery on his thumb, MotoGP officials said.
Luthi won the 125cc title in 2005 and is ninth this season in the 250 class, one of the support series in the MotoGP world championship. There was no immediate indication whether he would be able to ride in Sunday's race.
