EUGENE, Ore. —

Tyson Gay has broken the U.S. record in the men's 100 meters by clocking 9.77 seconds.

The old mark had stood since 1999, when Maurice Greene ran 9.79.

Gay's national record comes at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials in a quarterfinal heat Saturday.

The world record is 9.72, set by Jamaica's Usain Bolt last month.
