UW men's crew team cruises in Pac-10, women's team finishes fourth

Husky women might not receive NCAA championship invitation.

Seattle Times Staff Report

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. — Washington men's crews won every race at the Pac-10 championships Sunday on Lake Natoma but things didn't go as well for UW women.

The women's varsity eight finished fifth behind winner California, Stanford, Washington State and USC. The women's four-with-coxswain won but the second varsity eight (JV eight) was fourth and the women's novice eight was second.

Top-ranked Cal won the women's varsity eight race in 6:38.8. Stanford was clocked in 6:42.7, the Cougars in 6:44.7, USC in 6:46.3 and the Huskies in 6:49.6. The winning UW women's varsity four won in 7:39.6.

In women's team standings, California won with 79 points followed by Stanford with 61, WSU with 59, Washington 57, Oregon State 51, USC 50 and UCA 35.

The UW women must now wait to see if they receive an invitation Tuesday to the NCAA championship regatta May 30-June 1 on Lake Natoma. They are not expected to receive one.

Washington men led the men's team standings with 72 points followed by Cal with 63 and Stanford with 42. Washington State, where crew is a club rather than varsity sport, was sixth with 18 points.

Men's rowing isn't an NCAA sport and its championship event is the Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships June 5-7 in New Jersey. The Huskies are the defending national champions.

The top-ranked men's varsity eight won for the second straight year and covered the 2,000-meter course in 5 minutes, 52.1 seconds. Cal was second in 5:53.4.

Husky crews won the men's second varsity (JV) race in 6:00.9. The UW freshmen had a faster time, winning in 5:58.6. The varsity four-with-coxswain won in 6:47.3.
