College Basketball | Who's hot, who's not

Who's hot, who's not

Jack McClinton, G, Miami (Fla.)

A transfer from Siena, McClinton leads the ACC in three-point field-goal percentage (.453), free-throw shooting (.911) and has hit 18 straight foul shots in league play for a 15-5 team.

Robbie Cowgill, F, Washington State

The Cougars' senior, replaced for a game in the starting lineup last week, has only 23 points and 25 rebounds in Pac-10 play.

Five count

With several coaching changes already having been made, some other head men feeling heat:

1. Tim Welsh, Providence (12-7): Ten years with Friars, and nary an NCAA-tournament appearance

2. Norm Roberts, St. John's (7-11): Hasn't come close to restoring old pride to Johnnies' faithful

3. Ed DeChellis, Penn State (10-10): At 52-86 in five seasons, probably won't get as long a leash as JoePa

4. Leonard Hamilton, Florida State (13-9): In six seasons, perennial bubble team perennially doesn't make it

5. Sean Sutton, Oklahoma State (10-10): Will get time, but about to miss NCAAs 2nd straight year, and dad hadn't done that since '96 and '97

Triple shot

Three unsolicited takes on college-basketball happenings:

Kevin Mouton is auditioning as much for the job at San Francisco as he is Oregon State. A USF grad, Mouton could state a case for the Dons position after the Eddie Sutton Victory Tour is complete.

Gonzaga's urgency to win the WCC tournament for entry into the NCAAs has eased. Zags victims like Saint Joseph's (12-5), Connecticut (15-5) and even Virginia Tech (13-8) have played well recently.

Fox solidifies its standing as a second-rate TV entity with stunts like last Saturday, when it couldn't break away from a double-overtime game between the Maryland and North Carolina women, leaving local viewers to miss 10 minutes of the Arizona-Washington men's game.
