Notebook | Portland single-handedly keeps Brockman in check

Jon Brockman kept waiting for the swarm.

Instead, Portland defended him with one player most of the way Saturday, and that seemed to throw Brockman off his game as he was held to 11 points in Washington's sluggish 67-63 victory over Portland.

Brockman, who was 3-for-6 shooting — a season-low in attempts — didn't make his first field goal until 12:26 remaining.

"A frustrating night," Brockman said. "Every basketball player has them. So as hard as it is, as much sleep as you lose off of it, you've got to come back and make sure you don't make the same mistakes again."

Portland coach Eric Reveno decided to play Brockman straight up in large part because he worried that double-teaming Brockman would lead to a lot of offensive rebounds and easy shots for the Huskies.

"You are picking your poison a little bit," Reveno said.

Portland, however, also outrebounded the Huskies 33-28 as Brockman had just five, a season-low, before fouling out after playing 31 minutes.

Dentmon takes a seat

Junior point guard Justin Dentmon played 12 minutes, a season-low, and only two in the second half after he was benched after a turnover with about 12 minutes left to play. With the Huskies ahead by three, Dentmon led a three-on-one break that fizzled when he threw a lob pass that was picked off and led to a three-point play the other way. He played 12 seconds the rest of the game.

"That [the pass] had a lot to do with it," Romar said of Dentmon's playing time the rest of the game. "Just win the game. But Justin's fine. He's been having a good year. Just one of those things. He's not in the doghouse at all."

NOTES

• Artem Wallace got his first start of the year for the Huskies as Romar unveiled yet another new lineup. Wallace started alongside Brockman, Joel Smith, Tim Morris and Ryan Appleby. Only nine Huskies played, with Joe Wolfinger and Justin Holiday sitting out as a coach's decision (both were healthy, Romar said).

The Huskies' lineup was about the most experienced possible, with two seniors and three juniors, but Romar said all that counted was defensive effort in practice.

"It didn't matter if you are 6 years old," he said. "If you were here and committed to defense and able to do something about it, then you were going to be in that lineup."

• Portland was led by the 23 points of sophomore guard Nik Raivio, the brother of former Gonzaga star Derek Raivio.

• The Pilots shot 50 percent in the first half. Washington made 10 of 30 shots.
