Perlozzo named M's third base coach

Sam Perlozzo, who waved Ken Griffey Jr. around third base in perhaps the greatest moment in Mariners history, is returning to the M's as third-base coach.
Perlozzo, 56, was named to manager John McLaren's staff today, filling a position originally earmarked for Larry Bowa. But Bowa opted instead to join the coaching staff of new Dodgers manager Joe Torre, and the Mariners turned to Perlozzo.
"When the situation happened with Larry, I had a hunch I ought to watch that and see what's going on,'' Perlozzo said by phone from Florida. "I'm just excited. It's a good team with a good staff. I know everyone in Seattle. The key is you want to go somewhere where you're wanted and where you're comfortable. These people make it that way.''
Perlozzo's most recent position was manager of the Baltimore Orioles. He was named on Aug. 4, 2005 to replace Lee Mazzilli, and was fired on June 18 of last season.
He served as third-base coach with the Mariners under manager Lou Piniella from 1993-95, and was in the coaching box for Edgar Martinez's game-winning double in Game 5 of the 1995 Division Series against the Yankees. Griffey scored from first on the play.
"With Sam joining our staff, I think we really have a terrific group,'' McLaren said. "I believe he can have a key impact on our club from the third-base position, and in working with our young infielders.''
Perlozzo is the fifth new coach hired by McLaren, joining pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre, bench coach Jim Riggleman, bullpen coach Norm Charlton and first-base coach Eddie Rodriguez.
