What happened: The Huskies held one full-squad practice in the afternoon, going in shells (helmets and shoulder pads only).
Savannah perseveres: Junior linebacker E.J. Savannah remains on the second team at weakside linebacker behind sophomore Chris Stevens, a demotion from the spring, which he finished atop the depth chart. Savannah said the decision "could have been" related to conditioning, though he said he came to camp in better shape this year than last season. He said he's about 227 pounds, about five more than last spring, and he said his goal was to get a little bigger and stronger. Savannah said he isn't upset over the move. "I just took it as them wanting me to prove myself again and go out there and make some plays," he said. "It just means I've got to work harder, that's all."
Butler sidelined: Projected starting middle linebacker Donald Butler, a sophomore, sat out practice as a precautionary measure to protect his right knee, which is still recovering from offseason surgery.
Davenport, Russo injured: Two Huskies suffered injuries in the team's afternoon practice. Senior receiver Anthony Russo suffered what Willingham said was a finger separation, though he said it could be worse and that the exact nature wasn't yet known, and junior cornerback Byron Davenport suffered a hamstring injury. Willingham said Davenport could be out a couple weeks, though he would know more today.
