Seahawks sign third-round pick DT Mebane

The Seahawks have signed defensive tackle Brandon Mebane, their third-round draft choice, the team announced today.

Seattle Times staff reporter

The Seahawks have signed defensive tackle Brandon Mebane, their third-round draft choice, the team announced today.

Also, defensive end Baraka Atkins, the first of two of Seattle's fourth-round picks, has agreed to terms and is expected to sign a multi-year deal later today, according to a source.

Mebane, 6-foot-1 and 314 pounds from California, was chosen with 85th overall pick of April's draft. He's viewed as a solid run-stuffing interior lineman and figures to join a defensive tackle rotation that for now includes veterans Rocky Bernard, Marcus Tubbs, Chuck Darby, Russell Davis and Craig Terrill.

Atkins, from Miami, joins veteran ends Patrick Kerney, Bryce Fisher and Darryl Tapp as the top four players at right and left defensive end currently on the Seahawks' depth chart. The Seahawks released center Nick Jones last week and kicker Tyler Jones today to make room on the roster for Mebane and Atkins.

With the signings of Mebane and Atkins, the Seahawks have only one more draft choice unsigned. Cornerback Josh Wilson, the team's second-round pick, is expected to sign his contract before training camp starts this weekend, and his deal should get done as the market is set for other teams' second-round picks.

Seahawks rookies are to report to team headquarters in Kirkland on Thursday.
