The Sonics will name P.J. Carlesimo their head coach, according to a source with the Sonics.
The team has scheduled a news conference at noon on Thursday to make the announcement. Carlesimo, an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs, and Dwane Casey, a former Sonics assistant coach, were the two finalists for the job.
Carlesimo replaces Bob Hill, who was fired after the Sonics' 31-51 season.
Carlesimo inherits a team that has changed drastically in the past week. The Sonics traded Ray Allen to Boston, drafted Kevin Durant and Jeff Green, and learned that free agent Rashard Lewis will leave for Orlando.
Carlesimo has been an assistant with the Spurs, under coach Gregg Popovich, the past five seasons. The Sonics' 30-year-old general manager, Sam Presti, was hired last month from San Antonio, where he was an assistant GM.
Carlesimo has been a head coach twice before in the NBA, with Portland and Golden State. He was 137-109 in three seasons with the Trail Blazers (1994-97), losing in the first round of the playoffs each season.
With the Warriors, Carlesimo was 46-113 in 2½ seasons. His tenure there is best remembered for the Latrell Sprewell choking incident on Dec. 1, 1997. Sprewell choked Carlesimo during a practice after an argument, was suspended for the rest of the season and never played again for the Warrirors.
Carlesimo, 57, was a college head coach at New Hampshire (1975-76), Wagner (1976-82) and Seton Hall (1982-94).
