Oct. 20, 2004 Mike Hargrove is named manager of the Mariners, replacing Bob Melvin, who had been fired after a 63-99 season.
April 4, 2005 Hargrove wins his first game as Mariners manager, a 5-1 victory over Minnesota at Safeco Field. Mariners finish the season 69-93, in fourth place in the AL West.
2005 Hargrove and Ichiro don't exactly hit it off and that unspoken tension is an underlying reality and a source of speculation. Newsday went so far as to say Hargrove had asked for Ichiro to be traded, and Ichiro had asked for Hargrove to be fired. The report is denied by everyone involved, and their relationship improves in subsequent seasons.
Sept. 29, 2006 Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln, after watching the Mariners lose to Texas on Fan Appreciation Night, makes it clear that Hargrove and general manager Bill Bavasi have to get the team turned around in 2007. "Mike Hargrove and Bill Bavasi are on my hot seat," Lincoln says. "I expect that they are going to work even harder than they are already working."
2006 Mariners finish the season 78-84, a nine-game improvement from the previous season, but still in fourth place.
July 1, 2007 Hargrove announces he will resign before the Mariners' game at Safeco against Toronto. The 2-1 win is the eighth in a row for the Mariners, and pushes them 12 games above .500 — both highs for the team under Hargrove. He finishes with a 192-210 record in Seattle. John McLaren, the Mariners' bench coach, is named to replace Hargrove.
