A year ago, left-handed pitcher Nick Hagadone combined with Tim Lincecum for Washington's first nine-inning no-hitter in 28 years.
Lincecum has moved on and is in the San Francisco Giants' rotation. Hagadone took the first step toward one day joining Lincecum in the big leagues when he was selected with the 55th overall pick in Thursday's amateur draft. Hagadone (Sumner High School) was picked in the supplemental round between the first and the second round, the fourth-highest selection for a UW player.
It was also a good day for seven other players with state connections as five of 50 rounds were completed in Orlando, Fla. The draft ends today.
Gonzaga right-handed pitcher Clayton Mortensen was taken in the supplemental round (36th overall pick) by the St. Louis Cardinals. Lake Stevens High graduate Mitchell Canham, a catcher at Oregon State, was taken in the supplemental round by the San Diego Padres (No. 57).
Three state high-school players were taken, led by Travis Mattair, a third baseman at Southridge (Kennewick), going in the second round to Philadelphia with the 83rd overall pick. Shortstop Steven Souza of Cascade (Everett) was taken in the fourth round (No. 100) by the Washington Nationals and center fielder Dustin Biell of Inglemoor (Kenmore) was taken in the fifth round (No. 155) by Tampa Bay.
RHP Greg Peavey of Hudson's Bay (Vancouver), expected to be first state high-schooler taken, was not drafted.
