Prep Notebook | Tubbs in All-State weekend matchups

Riley Tubbs, The Seattle Times' Male High School Star of the Year, is one of three Tahoma High School players expected to participate in the All-State baseball series Saturday and Sunday at Parker Field in Yakima.

Tubbs, an outfielder who has signed with Washington State, is on Team C along with Tahoma pitcher Kirk Wetmore. David Bentrott, a shortstop from the Maple Valley school, was assigned to Team B. Wetmore and Bentrott are Washington recruits who, along with Riley, helped the Bears reach the Class 4A semifinals the past two years.

Auburn shortstop Troy Scott, the MVP of the South Puget Sound League 3A Division, is also a member of Team C.

Nick Hammons, a pitcher/infielder who helped Snohomish reach the 4A title game this spring, was named to Team A along with Jackson pitcher Geoff Brown, who is headed to Washington. Team D is coached by Bothell's Paul Moody and includes two Bothell players — shortstop Cody Atkinson and pitcher Chris Dennis.

The series begins at noon Saturday, when Team A plays Team B. At 3:15, Team C meets Team D. The two losers meet Sunday at 10:25 a.m., and the two winners play Sunday at 1:35 p.m.

Hopkins is Hale AD

Hoover Hopkins has been named athletic director at Nathan Hale in Seattle and will continue to serve as football coach.

Hale's veteran athletic director, Emerson Davis, is retiring after 30 years in the Seattle School District. Davis has been at Hale for 19 years, 16 as athletic director. At times he also has been head coach in cross country, wrestling and girls track.

His first coaching job in the district was helping his wife, Colleen, coach gymnastics at Hale. Colleen Hale was inducted into the Washington Gymnastics Coaches Hall of Fame this year

• West Seattle's Nina Fogle, a state champion in the floor exercise as a sophomore and second in the all-around the past two years, signed a letter of intent to compete in gymnastics at Ball State in Muncie, Ind. Fogle, a three-year letter winner at West Seattle, is an all-around level-10 gymnast and four-time national club qualifier.

• Jamie Giger, girls soccer coach at White River in Buckley for two seasons, has been named women's soccer coach at Elmira College, an NCAA Division III school in Elmira, N.Y.

• Rainier Beach defeated Franklin 93-84 in the title game of the 32-team Quaker Summer Slam boys basketball tournament last weekend. Beach's Reggie Moore was the tournament MVP. DeAngelo Casto, who played for 4A state champion Ferris last season, played for Franklin and his mother said he will be a Quaker in the fall.
