In 2004, Alex Prugh went to the U.S. Open as an alternate and never got to play.

This year, he's in.

Prugh, who just completed his senior season at the University of Washington, shot rounds of 71 and 69 at the Olympic Course at the Gold Mountain Golf Complex outside Bremerton to win the sectional qualifier Monday.

His day's highlight was sinking a gap wedge on the 431-yard par-4 fourth for eagle.

His 4-under score for two rounds was three strokes better than runner-up Ryan Zylstra of Woodstock, Ontario.

Prugh, a Spokane native who was the Huskies' low scorer in 10 of 12 events this season, will be one of 156 players at the Open on June 14 through 17 at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa.

Puyallup's Ryan Moore was one of 24 players who qualified from Scioto Country Club in Upper Arlington, Ohio.

Other qualifiers from Scioto included Bubba Watson, Jerry Kelly, Camilo Villegas, Sean O'Hair, amateur Trip Kuehne, Boo Weekley, Woody Austin and Anthony Kim. Kim won an 11-man playoff for one spot, holing a bunker shot on the first extra hole to stay in before earning a ticket with a par on the third extra hole.

Mark O'Meara, Darren Clarke, Mark Calcavecchia and Tom Lehman were among those who didn't make the field.

Note

Michelle Wie played in the pro-am at the LPGA Championship and worked briefly with her swing coach, and her agent said there was a "good chance" the 17-year-old would play in the second major of the year.

Wie, who sat out four months with injuries to both wrists, withdrew after 16 holes of the Ginn Tribute last week in South Carolina, citing her wrists.
