Notebook | Mebane happy to be a Seahawk

KIRKLAND — Being drafted, Brandon Mebane said in a relaxed, low voice, was an honor and a blessing.

But if Mebane was low-key about being taken in the third round by the Seahawks, his father, Walter, was Mr. Excited, Mebane said at his introductory news conference at Seahawks headquarters Monday morning.

Walter Mebane put on a long-sleeve Seahawks T-shirt — the one the team gives to players it interviews as a parting gift at the February scouting combine — and he wore it to church in Brandon Mebane's hometown of Los Angeles on Sunday morning.

"He was like, 'I gotta show you off, I gotta show you off in church,' " Mebane said.

The defensive tackle out of the University of California said two Seahawks he knew of before being drafted by the team are running back Shaun Alexander and linebacker Lofa Tatupu.

Mebane, who will wear No. 92 in Seattle, watched Tatupu from the Cal bench while playing against Tatupu's USC team.

"He was all over the field," Mebane said.

Roster looks set

The draft is over, as is the most active time period of free agency, and the Seahawks have added the free agents and NFL Europa players to fill out the roster for minicamps and training camp.

"Our roster is pretty much set," general manager Tim Ruskell said. "You want to keep the phone lines open. You never know what might happen, but absolutely, that's the case."

That said, coach Mike Holmgren said he will "probably always" want to add another veteran quarterback, so he can allow backup Seneca Wallace to "do some other things."

"That's the motivation," he said. "We [he and Ruskell] will always be looking for someone that could probably fit that bill and we have [looked] the last couple years. But the fact of the matter is, that's a tough guy to find. Tim said it very well — it doesn't happen very often, but we will always be listening and looking."

Note

• Three Washington State Cougars signed with NFL teams as undrafted free agents: T Charles Harris with Tennessee; TE Cody Boyd with Pittsburgh, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette; and DE Mkristo Bruce with Miami, according to Cougfan.com. Cougars WR Jason Hill was drafted in the third round, the highest of any player from a college in this state this season.

Times staff reporter Danny O'Neil contributed to this report.
