Mariners' trip ends the way it started — with no game being played

Their scheduled contest with the Red Sox at Fenway Park was called off because of rain, marking the fifth postponement on what was to have been a seven-game trip.

BOSTON — The Mariners' trip ended this afternoon the same way it began — with no game being played.

Their scheduled contest with the Red Sox at Fenway Park was called off because of rain, marking the fifth postponement on what was to have been a seven-game trip. The Mariners had all four games in Cleveland called off because of snow, and have now had as many games called off this season as they've played.

"It's one of those things where it doesn't do any good to sit and cry about it and play what if,'' Mariners manager Mike Hargrove said. "It is what it is, and we'll deal with it.''

Today's game will be made up on May 3, an off-day for both teams, beginning at 7:05 p.m. at Fenway Park. The Mariners were to be off that day as they traveled to New York to begin a series with the Yankees on May 4.

It now appears likely that the M's game at Safeco Field on May 2, originally scheduled to begin at 7:05, will be shifted to an earlier start to facilitate their travel to Boston. No makeup dates have been announced for the Cleveland series.

The Mariners left Fenway after the postponement was announced to prepare for their flight back to Seattle, where they will open a six-game homestand Friday at Safeco against Texas.

Hargrove said he will keep his pitchers in rotation, which means that Jarrod Washburn, today's scheduled starter, will work Friday for the first time since pitching against Oakland on April 3 — the second game of the season.
