The Storm chose Katie Gearlds of Purdue this morning in the WNBA draft.
Gearlds, a 6-foot-1 guard/forward, averaged 19.1 points and shot 39 percent from three-point range this season for the Boilermakers.
Gearlds was chosen with the Storm's first-round pick, the seventh overall.
Storm coach Anne Donovan described Gearlds, a two-time All-Big Ten selection, as the missing piece to fill backup roles along the perimeter.
"I think Seattle is a perfect fit for me,” said Gearlds via phone from Cleveland, where the draft was held. “To start the day, that’s where I thought I'd end up. I have a great opportunity to play for a great coach and learn from Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson and the others on the team. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
In the third round, with the 33rd pick, the Storm drafted Ohio State guard Brandie Hoskins. Hoskins, who was named MVP of the 2006 Big Ten tournament, was a projected first-rounder before sustaining a season-ending left Achilles tear this season. She tore her right Achilles as a junior during a 79-69 NCAA tournament loss to Boston College in 2006.
“When I heard that Seattle picked me I started crying,” Hoskins said. “They’re taking a risk on a player that’s been hurt the past two years, but it’s a dream come true. I’m still in shock because I really didn't think I would get picked.”
Because Hoskins still is in a walking boot, she is unable to sign with Seattle but the team retains her rights for next summer. She will continue to rehabilitate the injury and wants to play overseas by January 2008 before reporting to training camp next year.
