Washington center Spencer Hawes has met with Huskies coaches to discuss his future.

Soon, he apparently will tell the world.

"By the end of the week, he should be ready to talk about what his plans are," UW coach Lorenzo Romar said Tuesday.

And the increasing conventional wisdom is that Hawes will likely say he will declare for the NBA draft but without hiring an agent so that he will retain the option of returning to college.

The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the NBA draft is April 29. If Hawes declares without hiring an agent, he would have until June 18 to pull out of the draft and return to UW.

"I'd be surprised if he didn't do something along those lines," said one person with knowledge of the situation.

Romar said last week it would make sense for Hawes to declare without hiring an agent so he can attend tryout camps to get feedback on his draft standing before deciding anything definitive. Romar and Hawes met on Monday to discuss the player's plans.

Web sites that specialize in the NBA draft have also begun listing Hawes in the probable-to-declare category, with most projecting him to fall somewhere between picks five and 15 in the first round.

Hawes is enrolled in classes and has been attending informal workouts with the basketball team since returning from spring break last week.

• UW assistant coach Cameron Dollar remains one of the leading candidates for the head-coaching job at Long Beach State, having interviewed with school officials last week.

Some reports have listed Dollar, well known in the area due to his days as a player at UCLA, as the leading candidate. However, the school was apparently waiting to interview UCLA assistant Kerry Keating before making a final decision. Keating couldn't be interviewed until after UCLA finished up play in the Final Four.
