UW Men's Basketball | Dollar interviews at Long Beach St.

Seattle Times staff reporter

Washington assistant basketball coach Cameron Dollar said Monday night he interviewed for the head coaching vacancy at Long Beach State earlier in the day.

The school is seeking a successor for Larry Reynolds, whose contract was not renewed after five years despite leading the 49ers into the NCAA tournament with a 24-8 record overall and 12-2 in the Big West. The 49ers lost in the first round to Tennessee, 121-86.

Reynolds was 63-83 overall and the school is being investigated for recruiting violations that have already resulted in three-game suspensions for two players and the indefinite suspension of assistant coach Reggie Howard. However, that investigation isn't expected to yield major penalties.

"It's got to be a special situation to even think about leaving Washington," Dollar said.

Others rumored to be in the running for the job are former Gonzaga and Minnesota coach Dan Monson, Cal-State Northridge coach Bobby Braswell, UCLA assistant Kerry Keating and USC assistant Gib Arnold.

A decision is expected as soon as Wednesday.

Dollar, 31, has been with the Huskies for the past five seasons, coming with UW coach Lorenzo Romar from his previous stop at Saint Louis. The two have worked together for the past eight years overall and Dollar has emerged as UW's No. 1 assistant, handling recruiting and working with the team's guards.

Dollar is a well-known name in the Southern California area after playing point guard at UCLA for four years, including the 1995 team that won the national title in Seattle. He also later served as an assistant coach at UC Irvine and as head coach for one season at Southern California College, an NAIA school.

The Huskies have not had a change to their coaching staff since losing Ken Bone following the 2005 season when he became the head coach at Portland State.

Note

• Former Curtis High guard Isaiah Thomas, attending South Kent (Conn.) Prep School, is back in the area for spring break and reiterated Monday that he intends to sign with Washington next fall and become a Husky in 2008.
