Seahawks release Wistrom

The Seahawks released defensive end Grant Wistrom today. Wistrom played three years with the Seahawks.

Seattle Times staff reporter

The Seahawks released defensive end Grant Wistrom today.

Wistrom played three years with the Seahawks. He signed a $33 million contract in 2004 that included a $14 million signing bonus.

Seattle signed Patrick Kerney in free agency this week, and on Wednesday Seahawks president Tim Ruskell said the team would have to discuss Wistrom's future.

The discussion ended with Wistrom's release. He was scheduled to make $3.5 million in 2007, according to the NFL Players Association database. The team won't pay him that, but half of his signing bonus total of $14 million will count against the team's salary cap. Wistrom will be designated a post-June 1 salary-cap cut. That would lessen the salary-cap hit that will come with Wistrom's release by spreading it over multiple years.

Wistrom had 11.5 sacks in his three years with Seattle. He suffered a knee injury in his first year with the Seahawks and missed seven games.
