Jim Mora is coming back to Seattle, joining the Seahawks staff as an assistant head coach. He will be the team's secondary coach.
"I'm excited to have the opportunity to add someone to the staff with the energy and passion that Jim brings to the game," coach Mike Holmgren said in a statement released by the team.
Mora was head coach of the Atlanta Falcons for the past three years. His team reached the NFC championship game in his first year there, but failed to make the playoffs the past two years. He was fired at the end of the regular season after the Falcons lost their final three games and finished 7-9.
Mora was reportedly a candidate for the head-coaching job in Miami, but that went to Cam Cameron, San Diego's offensive coordinator last season. Now, he comes to Seattle where big plays were a concern for the secondary. The Seahawks gave up the lead on a touchdown catch in the final minutes of three different games last season.
"I'm thrilled to join not only what I believe is a quality organization, but for the chance to work with one of the finest head coaches in the league", Mora said in the statement. "That, coupled with the opportunity for my family to be in the great Northwest is extremely exciting."
Mora attended Interlake High School in Bellevue and played at the University of Washington. His father, also named Jim, was an NFL coach both with the Saints and Colts. The Seahawks new assistant coach, however, is not "Jr." as many mistakenly refer to him. He does not have the same middle name as his father.
Teryl Austin coached the Seahawks secondary last season, but he accepted a job with Arizona last week. Austin's coaching contract with Seattle did not extend to the 2007 season.
