Blowers added to M's broadcast crew
Former Mariners' infielder Mike Blowers will join the team's broadcast crew this season, along with veteran play-by-play announcer Dave Sims.
Seattle Times staff reporter
Former Mariners' infielder Mike Blowers will join the team's broadcast crew in 2007, along with veteran play-by-play announcer Dave Sims.
Blowers and Sims will team with long-time Mariners' announcers Dave Niehaus and Rick Rizzs.
The Mariners announced the hirings today, saying that Sims will focus on play-by-play duties on the television broadcasts, while Blowers will serve primarily as a television analyst.
The Mariners' plan is for Niehaus to begin each game in the TV booth for the first few innings with Blowers, and then move to the radio booth with Rizzs. For most games, Rizzs will work on the radio side only. Sims and Blowers will team up when Niehaus goes to the radio booth.
The impending hiring of Sims became known last weekend. He has called major-league baseball and college basketball for ESPN, as well as NFL games on Westwood One/CBS Radio.
Blowers has gained broadcasting experience since his retirement, serving as pre- and post-game analyst on KOMO radio the last four years. He had three separate stints playing for the Mariners, from 1992-95, 1997, and 1999.
"This is something I've been working toward for the last six years,'' Blowers said. "I really got my major-league start playing with the Mariners in 1992, and I had my best years professionally with Seattle. This is where I grew up and I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to once again be part of the organization.''
Blowers replaces former analysts Dave Henderson and Dave Valle, who may appear in more limited roles.
