UW Volleyball | From the White House to China

Special to The Seattle Times

A look back at events involving the Washington volleyball team since it appeared in (and won) last December's NCAA Final Four in San Antonio:

• Received a police escort from the airport after returning to Seattle.

• Governor helped raise its NCAA championship banner at Edmundson Pavilion.

• Visited the White House.

• Threw out the first pitch at a Mariners game.

• Courtney Thompson received 2005 Honda Award as nation's best college volleyball player and was nominated for an ESPY (best college female athlete).

• Two All-Americans depart: libero Candace Lee (now with the U.S. national team) and outside hitter Sanja Tomasevic.

• Toured China for 10 days last summer, playing four exhibitions.

• Attracted two record home crowds — 6,216 (Washington State, Oct. 13) and 6,846 (Ohio State, Friday); also played in front of 6,549 (Penn State, Saturday).

• Extended its home winning streak to 31 matches.
