Tony Hawk: The skateboard icon took to a ramp in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Sunday to raise money for youth skate parks in low-income communities.

His foundation's annual "Stand up for Skateparks" fundraising event, staged at the estate of supermarket magnate Ron Burkle, attracted a crowd of about 900, including rocker John Fogerty and actors Jamie Lee Curtis and David Spade.

They were treated to ollies and kickflips in a vertical skating demonstration from Hawk, Bucky Lasek and Olympic snowboarding gold medalist and part-time pro skater Shaun White.

Hawk, 38, said his organization has helped cities once suspicious of young thrashers to soften their views of the sport.

"Towns that do take the plunge and build a facility end up seeing positive results and having less problems with kids skating where they don't want them to," he said Hawk. "They almost always build another one. They get more use than tennis courts or baseball fields."

Zoe Koplowitz: She finished the New York City Marathon in just under 29 hours on Monday, a day after the men's and women's winners crossed the finish line.

Using fuchsia-colored crutches, Koplowitz started at 5:45 a.m. Sunday and finished at 10:30 a.m. Monday. It was the 19th New York City Marathon for Koplowitz, who lives in Manhattan and was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis more than 30 years ago at age 25.

Her physical therapist and the New York City Guardian Angels accompanied her along the route, much like Lance Armstrong had former marathon champions Alberto Salazar and Joan Benoit Samuelson running alongside to pace him.

Members of the New York City chapter of the MS Society greeted her at the finish line in Central Park.

Brazil's Marilson Gomes dos Santos (2:09.58) and Latvia's Jelena Prokopcuka (2:25.05) won the event.
