Seattle Times staff reporter

Mount Si running back Brandon Yakaboski has verbally committed to play football at Washington.

Yakaboski, a 6-foot, 196-pound senior, said he was at a soccer game Thursday night when Huskies coach Tyrone Willingham called him on his cellphone.

"He said, 'We're going to offer you a scholarship,'" Yakaboski recalled. "Right then, I was like, 'Yes, I accept.' I just felt like all the hard work paid off just then."

Yakaboski, who leads the KingCo 3A Conference in rushing with 1,443 yards and 16 touchdowns, said he looks forward to helping UW rebuild and playing with current UW freshman quarterback Jake Locker.

"I'm just excited to be part of the UW family," said Yakaboski, who was also the KingCo 3A offensive MVP as a junior. Yakaboski was also considering Oregon, Oregon State and California.

Mount Si hosts Kelso at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the preliminary round of the state football playoffs.
