Ann Meyers, 51, makes bold career move

PHOENIX — Ann Meyers, a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, has been coaxed away from her broadcast career to become general manager of the WNBA Phoenix Mercury and a vice president of the NBA Phoenix Suns.

"I have been pursued the last 10 years by the league and different teams, but it just was not the right timing," Meyers said at a news conference Tuesday. "I'm looking for the challenge. I'm looking to be with a winner."

Meyers, widow of Don Drysdale, a Hall of Fame baseball pitcher, will oversee a Mercury team that features All-Stars Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter but missed the playoffs this year.

"My first priority is going to be the Mercury," the 51-year-old Meyers said.

Meyers was a four-time Kodak All-American at UCLA and led the Bruins to the 1978 national title.

She has worked for ESPN, NBC and CBS.

Bird scores 20 as U.S. beats China

SAO PAULO, Brazil — Sue Bird of the Storm scored a game-high 20 points to lead the two-time defending champion United States to a 119-72 win over China on the opening day of the FIBA women's world championship.

Notes

• Three days after winning the WNBA title, Detroit Shock players were honored at a rally in front of the Spirit of Detroit statue downtown. A couple of hundred fans attended on a rainy day.

Dave Cowens, 57, joined the Detroit Pistons as an assistant coach, leaving his job as coach and general manager of the WNBA Chicago Sky.

A Hall of Fame center with the Boston Celtics in the 1970s, Cowens' last NBA coaching job was with the Golden State Warriors from 2000 to 2001.

• The Miami Heat waived reserve guard Derek Anderson, 32, who came to the Heat from Houston in February and averaged 5.8 points for Miami.
