Sounders winning streak ends

Special to The Seattle Times

It took a crafty old veteran from the Montreal Impact to ruin the evening for the Seattle Sounders and upstage one of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) First Division's bright new faces.

Montreal forward Mauro Biello got the last laugh over the Sounders and rookie Cam Weaver, the league's leading scorer.

Biello, a substitute entering in the 60th minute, scored the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute to help the Impact to a 2-1 win over the Sounders on Saturday night in a USL First Division match before 3,504 fans at Qwest Field.

The Impact (8-1-5) remained atop the USL First Division, moving into a tie with the Vancouver Whitecaps. The Sounders remained in 10th place, slipping to 5-8-4 in league, 6-10-4 overall.

"I don't mind if a team scores a nice goal, but to give two goals away like that sucks," Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer said. "I thought we had our defensive struggles licked."

The win for the Impact, the 2004 USL First Division champions, boosted their unbeaten string to 11 matches. The loss ended a four-match unbeaten streak for Seattle.

"We just gave away sloppy goals," said Sounders defender Danny Jackson. "We had lapses and they punished us."

Seattle caught Montreal off guard defensively to take a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute on Weaver's twisting header off a long throw-in by Ben Somoza. Weaver directed the ball off the back of his head, out of the reach of Montreal goalkeeper Andrew Weber, and into the right corner of the net. With the goal, Weaver regained the USL First Division's scoring lead with 23 points on his league-best 11th goal.

The Impact came back in the 37th minute with forward Joel Bailey's first goal of the season, tying the score 1-1. Bailey's 15-yard shot slid just under the outstretched right arm of Sounders goalkeeper Chris Eylander and into the right corner.

Biello, the Impact's all-time leading scorer with 194 points, including 66 goals, clinched the win on an assist from forward Daniel Antoniuk in the 72nd minute. The 33-year-old Biello, in his 13th season with Montreal, knocked in a 10-yard shot, glancing the shot off Eylander and into the left corner.

Eight yellow cards and two ejections were issued during the match. Antoniuk and Seattle's Leighton O'Brien were ejected in the 89th minute with Antoniuk being issued a red card and O'Brien collecting his second yellow for an altercation.
