NBA Notes: Blazers' Randolph involved in street race

PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland Trail Blazers forward Zach Randolph was a passenger of a driver cited for racing in downtown Portland early Thursday, police said.

Taquan Portis, 22, was cited for speed racing, careless driving, failure to obey a traffic signal and no front plate — all traffic violations. He is scheduled to appear in court July 6.

Portis was driving a Dodge Magnum registered to Randolph when the two were pulled over at 3:15 a.m.

Police found two loaded handguns in the car, but Randolph was not cited because he has a concealed-weapons permit, said Catherine Kent, a Portland police spokeswoman.

Officers estimated the car was racing at up to 60 mph in a 20 mph zone, Kent said.

Kent said the officers smelled marijuana but couldn't find any evidence of drug use.

The Trail Blazers issued a statement that said the team would conduct its own investigation into the incident.

"While Randolph was not ticketed or cited, he is mentioned in the police report as the legally licensed owner of two registered handguns found in the car," the statement read. "The team must withhold further comment, pending the outcome of its investigation."

Raptors trade

Araujo to Utah

TORONTO — The Toronto Raptors traded former first-round draft pick Rafael Araujo to the Utah Jazz for forward Kris Humphries and center Robert Whaley.

Toronto drafted Araujo with the eighth pick in the 2004 draft, but he ended up a bust — averaging just 2.9 points and 3.0 rebounds in 111 games.

Humphries averaged 3.6 points and 2.7 rebounds in 129 games with Utah. The 6-foot-9 Humphries was the 14th pick in the 2004 draft.

Whaley averaged 2.1 points and 1.9 rebounds in 23 games with Utah this season.

Brown leaving Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Shannon Brown will keep his name in the NBA draft and skip his senior season at Michigan State, the shooting guard said.

Brown, who averaged 17.2 points and 4.4 rebounds last season, was regarded as an early second-round pick or late first-round pick. But after strong workouts, he is a projected first-round pick in the draft June 28.

Brown worked out for the New Jersey Nets, the New York Knicks, the Philadelphia 76ers, the Indiana Pacers and the Boston Celtics, the Memphis Grizzlies and the Chicago Bulls.
