PEORIA, Ariz. – Centerfielder Jeremy Reed flew to Seattle today to have the broken bone in his right wrist examined by a hand specialist.
Reed fractured his scaphoid bone after chasing a fly ball and crashing into the outfield wall in the fifth inning of the Mariners win over Arizona on Thursday night. X-rays confirmed the break on this morning, which is when he left for Seattle to be examined by Dr. Carleton Keck of the Seattle Hand Group.
General manager Bill Bavasi guessed he might be be out about six weeks, give or take.
"We'll be real careful," Bavasi said.
As of Friday morning, Bavasi declined to discuss other options at centerfield. They could include moving Ichiro there from right field, or using utility man Willie Bloomquist, or going outside the organization to find another outfielder.
Backup outfielder Matt Lawton will miss the first 10 games of the season with a steroid suspension.
Asked how many of his players could play centerfield defensively, Bavasi answered in one word: "Enough.'' He said he would discuss options with manager Mike Hargrove later in the afternoon.
