Notes: Roy gains three-point poise

He's not ready to say he'll challenge Duke senior J.J. Redick in a shooting contest.

But Washington senior Brandon Roy hopes he proved something of a point over the weekend when he made 9 of 11 three-pointers against Arizona and Arizona State. Those two games moved him into second place in the Pac-10 in three-point shooting this week at 14 of 28 for the season, trailing only Omar Wilkes of California, who is 13 of 23.

Not bad for a guy whose supposed weakness is his perimeter shooting — he was 14 of 57 from the three-pointer line in his UW career before this season.

"I think that's something that Pac-10 coaches, from now on if I'm standing on the perimeter, they're going to say 'Brandon Roy is out there, he's a shooter,' " Roy said.

"Three-point shooting is not something I'm saying I want to be in the race for. But in those games, it was something big and something we needed."

Roy, however, missed both of his attempts in Monday night's 87-71 victory over Cornell.

"I couldn't make one tonight," he said. "But I felt like we didn't need one tonight. But in the bigger games, I felt like my confidence is just nails."

NOTES

• Despite Lute Olson's politicking for Brandon Roy to share Pac-10 Player of the Week honors with Hassan Adams, the conference decided to only honor Adams, who scored 32 points in Saturday's Wildcats win over the Huskies. Adams also scored 25 in a win over Washington State on Thursday. Roy scored 35 points against both Arizona State and UA and Olson said afterward he thought the conference should let the two players share the honor, something rarely done. Adams also won it last week.

• The Huskies fell from No. 7 to No. 10 in both major polls after the loss to Arizona. The Huskies are still the highest-rated Pac-10 team with UCLA No. 17 in the AP poll and Arizona — which had been out of the poll a week ago — back at No. 21. Gonzaga (10-3) is ranked eighth in the AP poll and ninth in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll.

• Mike Jensen, who missed the first nine games of the season while recovering from shoulder surgery, still appears to be a little rusty. He scored just six points in 37 minutes in UW's games against Arizona and Arizona State. Jensen was 2 of 7 overall and 0 of 3 from the three-point line against Cornell in 15 minutes while Hans Gasser had nine points in 18 minutes.
