Apparently, a sluggish win over Lehigh was finally enough to convince those who vote in The Associated Press college basketball poll that the Washington Huskies are better than Gonzaga.

In the process of moving up to No. 7 in this week's AP poll — their highest standing in that poll in 21 years — the Huskies also moved past the Bulldogs for the first time this season.

Washington remained No. 7 in the ESPN/coaches poll.

The No. 7 AP ranking is the Huskies' highest in that poll since they were No. 7 on Dec. 18, 1984. The last time UW was higher than No. 7 was Feb. 3, 1976, when the Huskies were No. 6.

Washington, No. 9 in last week's AP poll, moved ahead of then-No. 7 Oklahoma, which lost by 24 points to West Virginia, and Gonzaga, which had remained ranked ahead of the Huskies despite losing to Washington in Seattle on Dec. 4.

The Huskies are 10-0 for the first time since the 1975-76 season, when they started 14-0 and three times were ranked as high as No. 6 in the AP poll.

Their highest ranking ever is No. 2, on March 10, 1953, the same season they made their only appearance in a Final Four. Their highest AP ranking last season was No. 8.

Arizona State @ Washington men, 7 p.m.

Washington, the highest-ranked Pac-10 team, begins conference play at 7 p.m. Thursday against Arizona State at Edmundson Pavilion.

Hicks earns Pac-10 honor

Huskies junior guard Cameo Hicks was named the Pac-10 women's basketball player of the week for Dec. 19-25, commissioner Tom Hansen announced Monday.

She averaged 19.5 points, four rebounds, two assists, one block and three steals as the Huskies defeated California and 10th-ranked Stanford last week. In the two games, she shot 46.9 percent from the field (15 of 32), 60 percent from beyond the arc (3 of 5) and 85.7 percent (6 of 7) from the foul line.

The player of the week honor is the first for Hicks and the 24th all-time for Washington (9-2, 2-0 Pac-10), which next plays at Arizona State on Thursday.
