Bob Weiss acknowledged Thursday that he made an error during his first game as Sonics coach while defending other decisions during a 101-93 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday.
Normally, Ray Allen or Rashard Lewis remains on the floor, but Weiss had them both on the bench at the start of the fourth quarter. Los Angeles trimmed a 13-point deficit to seven before Weiss inserted Lewis. When Allen returned, Seattle led by three and lost its momentum.
Weiss said he told Allen and Lewis, "I'm going to have to substitute one of you guys earlier."
Weiss was also criticized for not double-teaming Sam Cassell, who scored 15 of his game-high 35 points in the fourth. The Sonics coach said he wanted Cassell to make difficult shots and not give easy baskets to other players.
Weiss finish the opener with a three-guard lineup that did not include 6-foot-6 Damien Wilkins, regarded as Seattle's best perimeter defender.
"That was the thought that was in my head, too," said Wilkins when asked why he didn't play at the end. "Coach makes the decisions that are best for the team and that decision to not put me in, I don't know why he didn't do that."
Said Allen of Wilkins: "He would have been a good call to be in the game, and I think that was a beginning-of-the-season mishap for all of us."
Notes
• C Vitaly Potapenko practiced Thursday and is expected to play tonight.
• Allen and Lewis did not practice, but both are expected to play tonight.
• F Danny Fortson also missed the workout with a bruised knee and was expected to undergo tests..
