NHL roundup: Canucks' Cooke breaks his jaw

VANCOUVER, B.C. — Vancouver Canucks forward Matt Cooke broke his jaw in practice Tuesday and will be sidelined indefinitely.

The 27-year-old Cooke was struck in the jaw with a puck, a team statement said. He will undergo surgery and be placed on injured reserve.

The 5-foot-11, 205-pound winger, a top penalty-killer for the Canucks, has three goals and two assists.

Vancouver also will be without No. 1 goaltender Dan Cloutier for at least three games. Cloutier has a concussion, the result of a collision with teammate Nolan Baumgartner during Saturday's loss at Colorado.

Cloutier, 5-2-1 this season, hit his head on a goal post when Baumgartner ran him over while trying to check Colorado's Andrew Brunette, who drove to the net and scored on the play. Under league guidelines, Cloutier must be symptom-free for at least a week before he can return.

Tuesday night's games

At Islanders 4, Bruins 3 (OT)

Shawn Bates scored with 28.2 seconds left in overtime and New York recovered from two blown leads to beat Boston.

Bruins defenseman Brian Leetch, 37, injured his right knee in the second period and didn't return. He said he expects to see doctors today.

At Red Wings 4, Blackhawks 1

Notes

• Former Canucks superstar Pavel Bure, 34, was selected as general manager of Russia's Olympic hockey team, charged with improving on the team's third-place showing in the 2002 Games.

• Left wing Luc Robitaille of the Los Angeles Kings might miss from two to four weeks because of a broken right leg.

Robitaille, 39, had been playing despite the injury, and an MRI revealed the fracture.
