A day off was apparently all Washington quarterback Isaiah Stanback needed as he returned to practice yesterday, expected to be full-go after letting a few bruises suffered in Saturday's loss at Oregon heal.
With Stanback back in the fold, Johnny DuRocher was returned to No. 2 on the depth chart after taking the majority of the snaps in Tuesday's practice.
"That's the life of a backup," said DuRocher, who estimated he took 40-50 snaps Tuesday compared to usually getting only a handful.
"I was a little winded," he said with a smile. "But it was good just to be out there playing again."
That DuRocher got a few more snaps would theoretically make him more prepared to play if need be Saturday against No. 1-rated USC, though Stanback remains the starter.
Also back in the fold at quarterback is sophomore Carl Bonnell, who hasn't played this season while nursing a severe thigh contusion suffered the first week of camp. The injury worsened when the bruise calcified, Bonnell said, which accounted for a longer recovery time than originally expected. X-rays finally determined the extent of the injury a few weeks ago.
Bonnell said he expected to be able to be full-go in practice this week. "I'll be a bit out of shape, but I'll be able to do everything," he said, adding he hoped he could do enough "to at least be in the back of the coaches' minds in case anything does happen."
NOTES
• Willingham said OT Joe Toledo returned to practice Tuesday and will likely play Saturday. Toledo started the first game at left tackle before suffering a sprained ankle. His return will force an adjustment of the offensive line with Willingham saying the starters are still uncertain. Willingham said Tui Alailefaleula, moved from guard to tackle after Toledo was injured, has done a good job and will likely continue to get playing time.
• Backup FB Luke Kravitz suffered a broken hand Tuesday and could miss the rest of the season.
• Starting SS C.J. Wallace, nursing an injured foot suffered against Oregon, should be able to play Saturday. Willingham said DE Brandon Ala remains limited in practice.
• UW officials said yesterday that 63,914 tickets have been sold for Saturday's game. A lower figure had been provided to The Times on Tuesday that didn't include a few thousand tickets that have been sold by USC.
