WSU camp notebook: Cougars getting sharp uniform upgrade

Washington State will have new football uniforms this year, featuring what equipment director Milton Neal calls "a clean, traditional football look."

Neal said the home jerseys will be solid crimson with no striping. The road jerseys also won't have striping.

The Cougars will continue to be one of the nation's few programs with two sets of helmets — gray at home and crimson on the road.

In recent years, Cougars players surveyed have said they thought their road uniforms looked sharper than their home uniforms. The new uniforms will inspire a fresh discussion of which uniform looks best.

Neal said coach Bill Doba delegated the task of selecting new uniforms to a committee consisting of captains, members of the players committee and the equipment staff.

Notes

• TE Cody Boyd's right ankle injury continues to baffle. A CT scan was as inconclusive, as was an earlier MRI when it came to pinpointing the source of pain, according to a WSU spokeswoman. She said doctors are studying whether three bone cysts in the area of pain are factors in the injury.

Boyd, the team's No. 2 tight end, was unable to complete the opening day of practice Sunday. The 6-foot-8 pass target has been on crutches but has shown improvement, and yesterday was able to put some weight on the ankle.

• The camp roster includes eight freshman walk-ons who graduated from high school in June: RB Isoa Puailoa (Sandpoint, Idaho); DB Geoff Kirkwood (Othello); OLs Jimmy Magee (Ballard) and Scott Friberg (Lake Washington HS, Kirkland); WRs Corey Williams (Eastside Catholic), Andy Largent (Shadle Park HS, Spokane) and Reid McEllrath (Battle Ground HS); and DE James Maloney (West HS, Anchorage, Alaska).

More walk-ons will join the team after classes start, and the camp roster limit of 105 is lifted.

• The Cougars will have their first practice in full pads today, and their first two-a-day drills will be tomorrow. The first scrimmage is Saturday.
