Two 26-year-old runners who narrowly missed victories a year ago got their revenge yesterday at the Nordstrom Beat the Bridge 8-kilometer race yesterday.

James Thie of Cardiff, Wales, who was beaten in the final 400 meters to finish third in 2004, edged Dan McLean of Seattle by one second to win the 23rd annual race yesterday at Husky Stadium.

In the women's race, Margaret Butler of North Vancouver, B.C., won in 28 minutes, 37 seconds, avenging a second-place finish in 2004 to three-time winner Lyudmila Vasilyeva of Redmond.

Over 8,000 participated in the event, which was expected to raise more than $1 million for juvenile-diabetes research.

Thie won the men's race in 24:35. That was 26 seconds slower than his time last year, when he was outkicked by Uli Steidl of Shoreline and Eric Tollefson of Tacoma. Steidl's 2004 win ended six straight Beat the Bridge victories by Tollefson, who finished third yesterday in 24:52.

Thie, who finished fourth in the 1,500 meters at the 2004 World Indoor Championships, had his hands full against runnerup McLean, a former Kennedy High School and University of Puget Sound runner.

In the wheelchair divisions, Jacob Heilveil of Bothell won the men's 8K for the 10th consecutive year in 19:42, and Eve Hampton of Seattle won her second straight women's 8K in 30:42.

Beat the Bridge is the nation's fourth largest 8K race. More than 450 runners were caught when the University Bridge was raised two miles into the race.
