Martell Webster says he'll enter NBA draft

Martell Webster averaged 27.7 ppg for Seattle Prep.

Seattle Prep hoops standout Martell Webster released a statement today, saying he has decided to make himself available for the NBA draft.

But contrary to a published report, he said he has not signed an agreement with an agent and reserves the right to withdraw his name prior to the draft and attend the University of Washington, where he has signed a letter of intent.

"My decision to make myself available for the draft at this time has been a very difficult decision because of my strong desire to attend the University of Washington and play for Coach (Lorenzo) Romar,'' Webster said in his statement. "I am in awe of the program that he has established. ... I am proud to be associated with a man of such character and integrity and it would be an honor for me to play basketball for him.

"Nonetheless it has also been my dream since childhood to someday pursue a career in the NBA and challenge myself against the best players in the world.''

He added that he would like to "be in a position to provide for members of my family who have supported and cared for me.''

Webster, who is 6-foot-7, has until June 21 to withdraw his name to keep his college eligibility. The NBA draft is June 28, and Webster is projected to be among the top 15 picks. He also is expected to attend the pre-draft camp in Chicago June 7-11 to further assess his standing.
