Kings notebook: McMillan refutes accusations

Seattle Times staff reporter

Rick Adelman says series getting too aggressive.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Rick Adelman filed an official grievance to the NBA on Saturday hoping to stem what he perceives as rough play from the Sonics during their Western Conference playoff series.

"They've allowed too much to happen," Adelman told reporters. "On the boards, it's ridiculous what they're allowing to happen. I think after three games, someone should look at that, and when the officials come in here [yesterday], they should be aware of that. ... I know the playoffs are physical, but I've been told they're no different than the regular season."

Sonics coach Nate McMillan spent several minutes before last night's Game 4 refuting Adelman's claims.

"I heard some of the things that Rick was talking about and I totally disagree," McMillan said. "Danny Fortson's fouls the other night, as far as I'm concerned, were not fouls. I think he [Adelman] is sending a message to officials and he is trying to put a target on our bigs for working hard, honest work in the paint.

"I don't think he can show anything on that tape that was dirty by no means. That technical foul on Danny Fortson shouldn't have been a foul, if anything a no-call, maybe a double-foul, but certainly not a technical foul."

In Game 3, Fortson drew five fouls in eight minutes. Sacramento had 28 fouls, Seattle 26.

"Why is it that whenever me and Reggie Evans are mentioned, it's like we just robbed a 7-Eleven or something," Fortson said. "Trust me, that didn't happen. False police report.

"I understand where he's coming from because he's trying to win the series. All you got to do is mention my name to the league office and he knows basically my series is over with and I won't be able to play.

"The powers that be up top won't allow me. It's a smart move. But it's just not intelligent when he's got one of his players out there [Darius] Songaila taking cheap shots at Luke Ridnour and AD [Antonio Daniels], and taking cheap shots at me and anybody else that comes around."

Cuttino Mobley may have been the most distraught player lingering in the Kings' locker room. He declared himself "very upset" after a night that saw him as the main defender torched by Ray Allen for 45 points. Mobley countered with 16, but shot just 2 of 8 from three-point range. Asked if he was numb, he inadvertently made a pun using his own nickname. "I'm more than numb," he said. "Cat's got my tongue."

• Said Sacramento forward Kenny Thomas, "They came in and said keep your heads up, we just have to go [to Seattle] and get a win." Mobley added, "If you have any doubt in the back of your head, it'll definitely come to the surface, especially when things start going bad. So we've just got to stay positive."
