NBA playoff basketball is much like a chess match. So don't expect a repeat performance of Game 1 as both teams have been dissecting tape of the first-round opener and designing schemes to counter what worked well.
Cause: Sonics center Jerome James was the hero of Game 1 as he scored 17 points, collected a career-high 15 rebounds and blocked five shots.
Effect: Most of James' success was the result of Sacramento double-teaming Rashard Lewis in the low post with its center. Expect the Kings to continue double-teaming Lewis, but they'll likely use a guard as the pressuring defender, which should leave Luke Ridnour open.
Also, personnel changes are likely. Center Brian Skinner was good for Sacramento in the days after the February trade from Philadelphia, but in his past five games, he's averaging just 2.4 points and 5.2 rebounds. Look for more Brad Miller if healthy and Greg Ostertag.
Cause: Mike Bibby missed 15 of 16 shots, scored just three points and committed two turnovers in 37 minutes.
Effect: The Sonics would rather Bibby drive to the basket than allow him to shoot on the perimeter, so look for the Sacramento guard to penetrate, draw contact and get to the free-throw line early on.
It's unlikely Bibby, who averaged 19.6 points during the regular season, will have another performance like Game 1. He has scored fewer than 10 points in just seven games this season.
Cause: Ray Allen had 28 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Effect: Allen torched Cuttino Mobley, who countered with 22 points. Mobley was a defensive liability and reserve Bobby Jackson is a better option. Jackson, however, was scoreless in Game 1 and missed all seven of his field-goal attempts, including four three-pointers. The Kings can't win this series if Allen remains red hot, so expect more double teams.
Cause: Sacramento attempted 24 three-pointers, but sank just five.
Effect: As long as they're missing those shots, the Sonics aren't likely to change their defense. Lewis is completely engrossed in slowing down Peja Stojakovic. Look for Bibby and Mobley to use a variety of screens to get open.

Bottom line
Both teams scored far below their regular-season averages in Game 1, an 87-82 Sonics victory and are unlikely to duplicate their poor three-point shooting. The Sonics sank just 26.7 percent (4 of 15) three-pointers, while Sacramento was 20.8 (5 for 24).
Injuries
Sonics — None. Kings C Brad Miller (left fibula fracture) is probable.
