EVERETT — The Everett Silvertips did not merely experience déjà vu yesterday. They lived through the same nightmare for the second straight night.
Nigel Dawes' point-blank shot at 18:24 of overtime lifted Kootenay to a 4-3 victory over the Silvertips at the Everett Events Center and gave the Ice a 4-0 sweep of the teams' second-round Western Hockey League playoff series.
Just as it did in Monday's Game 3, the Ice scored in the final two minutes of regulation to wipe out a Silvertips lead and force the extra period.
Previously, Kootenay won the first two series games at home after both were tied well into the third period.
"I've never really been part of a four-game set like that, where every game was so close but every time the other team had just that little extra you need to get the job done," said Alex Leavitt, who gave Everett a 3-2 lead with an unassisted goal midway through the third period.
"You've got to give them credit. They're a good team, and they did what they needed to."
Dale Mahovsky provided the tying score for the Ice with a shot from the top of the right circle with 1:53 left in regulation.
At 78 minutes, 24 seconds, the game was the longest in Silvertips franchise history. The previous record came in Monday's overtime loss, at 73:35. It was also the fourth straight home playoff game to go to an extra period.
As the visitors celebrated the win that sent them to the Western Division finals, the crowd of 5,571 gave the Silvertips, the reigning division champs, a cowbell-ringing, standing ovation.
The players, in turn, huddled in front of their net and turned to salute the fans with raised sticks.
"It's such a humbling feeling when the red light goes on, knowing your career is over," said Tyler Dietrich, a second-year Everett player, who scored a first-period goal in just his second game back since suffering a broken ankle in the regular season. "But these fans have been behind us from the start. I can't say how much I appreciate that."
Everett overcame a devastating start, in which the Ice tallied goals on its first two shots, from Adam Cracknell and Ryan Russell, and led 2-0 just 3:37 into the opening period.
The Silvertips, outshot 48-19 in Monday's overtime loss, matched that 19 in the first period last night with a high-octane response to Kootenay's early barrage.
Dietrich scored at 12:14 after a steal and pass by Karel Hromas, and Kyle Annesley punched home a rebound of Curtis Billsten's shot to tie it at 17:58.
The sweep continues an impressive turnaround for Kootenay, which made the playoffs a year ago but was swept out in the first round. The Ice was picked in a preseason poll to finish last in the B.C. Division this year.
Everett was picked to finish 18th in the 20-team WHL but finished third in the U.S. Division and outdueled No. 2 Portland in seven games in the first round.
