Hawking their wares

Seahawks

The signings of Walter Jones and Matt Hasselbeck, plus the designation of Shaun Alexander as franchise player, gives the Seahawks a solid start to the upcoming free-agency period. But more remains to be done — the Seahawks still have 13 unrestricted free agents, and five restricted free agents. The unrestricted free agents can sign with any team beginning March 2. The Seahawks can tender one-year offers to any of the restricted free agents and retain the right to match any offer from another team.

Unrestricted free agents

WR Alex Bannister: Spent half of last season on injured reserve, and Seahawks missed him a great deal on special teams. Has indicated he'd like to stay in Seattle.

FB Heath Evans: Has waited in the wings behind Mack Strong for four years, and might jump at chance to go elsewhere for more playing time. Or he could be brought back if Strong opts to retire.

G Chris Gray: With Floyd Womack's emergence as a dependable lineman, Gray might be expendable. He could also decide to retire after 12 seasons. If front office decides he has a lot left, however, he figures to be re-signed.

QB Brock Huard: Injured all season, and No. 3 QB Seneca Wallace had a very good exhibition season last summer. Status for the future is uncertain.

LB Orlando Huff: Effort has been there, but he might not be asked to return, as Seahawks have other possibilities at middle linebacker. Got a vote of confidence from defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes late last season.

CB Ken Lucas: Probably earned himself a couple more million with his play last season, and should be re-signed. But without a lot of big names in the free-agent pool at his position, Lucas will get offers from other teams.

TE Itula Mili: Ended the regular season as the starter, but all three tight ends can play, and Mili will be in his ninth season next year. Hard to say where he fits in team's plans.

DE Brandon Mitchell: Versatile player, but Seahawks might look to go younger at his position.

DE Chike Okeafor: Set career high in sacks last season and played through injury. Complements Grant Wistrom to form good rush end/run defender combination. Should be re-signed but won't come cheap, and the Seahawks' salary cap has already taken three big hits.

P Tom Rouen: The best punter on the team when healthy last season, but probably won't be brought back unless 2004 draft pick Donnie Jones is deemed not ready.

C Robbie Tobeck: As long as he can hold up, is needed because of his leadership and heart. If not, the Seahawks don't have a proven center to fill his position and would have to either sign a free agent or take one in the draft.

P Ken Walter: Filled in admirably for Rouen and Jones, but was just a temporary fix.

OL Floyd Womack: Held his own as a starter at right tackle when Chris Terry went down, and should move into lineup as full-time starter at guard as soon as next season. Figures to get a raise from the $1.37 million he made in 2004.

Restricted free agents

DT Rocky Bernard: When healthy, is a capable backup who played well this season. Combines youth and game experience to be part of the future of defensive line. Should be tendered at $656,000, which will be low tender for restricted free agents.

S Terreal Bierria: Lost his starting job to the Seahawks' rookie of the year in 2004, Michael Boulware, but now has experience and has proven his worth on special teams. Figures to get a low tender.

TE Ryan Hannam: High-effort guy who saw more playing time as season progressed. A favorite among the coaches for his work ethic; will probably be tendered.

CB Kris Richard: Got better in third-cornerback role as last season went along and was also valuable on special teams. Seahawks should tender him.

S Marquand Manuel: Playing time increased throughout season. Seahawks might have to choose between tendering Manuel or Bierria. Damien Robinson, who was injured all season, also factors into the decision at safety.
