Jimmy — that's my 2001 GMC Jimmy — has lived a rough life. Not only is he a manual rolling around in a hilly city (the clutch has already had to be replaced), but his owner is me — a she-devil on the streets.
With my maturing age, I have calmed down a bit. But I have always wanted to hook my ride up so I can cruise around with pride. I had Moe Pilgrim, owner of Superior Auto Trim in Bellevue, estimate what a makeover would cost me.
He said the low-end total car makeovers average between $15,000 and $20,000 while the high end for a non-celebrity is anywhere between $25,000 and $65,000. Here's what I've always dreamed of giving Jimmy — both in reality and fantasy land:
Reality
Power windows and mirrors: Yes, it's true. I'm one of the last people on earth who don't have power interior. Pathetic, but it would cost me only $700 for the windows and $500 for retrofit power blinker mirrors.
Interior: I have fabric seats (thanks Dad), and I can't stand them. A suede/leather kit would run $2,000 to change this dated feel. To wrap the doors would cost another $1,400, and it all comes with a three-year warranty. Moe said this is the good stuff, but you can find cheap suede and leather for $25 to $30 a yard. It's another $800 to $1,200 for the headliner.
Sound system: I love to drive, actually looking at the scenery, so I wouldn't put a DVD player in my car. I've always dreamed of heavy bass thumping up my spine as I roll, however, and that would cost $2,000 to $3,000 for a smooth system.
Dash kit: Well, if I'm hooking up my seats, I'm surely not going to have plastic anywhere. A simple elegant wood upgrade would run $400 to $600.
Fresh paint: Currently, Jimmy is black, but I'm thinking silver for the new look. That would run $3,000 to $4,000, but I'd have to deal with looking at the black remains on the interior of the door. "Jamming" the car, taking it completely apart to make it all the same color, bumping the price up to $7,000. Reality says, "no-go."
Shoes: I just bought new tires for $500, and I don't care what Rashard Lewis says, I'm not ditching them for the must-have 22-inch rims. This is the reality section.
Moon roof: I'm not in Arizona riding around in my convertible anymore, but I miss looking at the stars and feeling the sun on a clear day. A factory sunroof would run $1,500.
Grand total: About $13,000 (Ah, this will be a work in progress).
Fantasy land
Well, I still have to have the power windows and mirrors and the moon roof. Here's the trinkets I dreamed up for Jimmy after snooping around to see what the Sonics have in their rides.
Interior: Sorry PETA, I have to have ostrich and suede interior. Thinking of how the dimpled effect of the material comes from plucking their feathers is disturbing, but it feels sooo good. The ostrich would be dyed powder pink, and the suede would be a light gray. The customizing would run $10,000. Again, the suede headliner is about $1,200.
Sound system: Gotta have ICE in my car — in-car entertainment. I went modest, even though this is a fantasy, with just two high-resolution DVDs in the headrests with amplifiers and the works. This would cost about $15,000.
Dash and extras: I want suede everywhere, and I don't want a kit. To change the plastic over, including the nice effect of wrapping the material like paper on a present, would run $2,000.
Embroidery: Might as well mark my ride, maybe with "Lady Jay" in the front seat headrests. This would cost about $100 each, but who's counting?
Shoes: For Rashard, I'd donate my current tires to Goodwill and put the must-have 22-inch rims on my ride, but I like Jerome James' specialty rims, with my junior high school No. 13. (Since I'm older than Jerome, I can say I had the number first.) That would run about $30,000 for a set of four.
Tint: My windows are already tinted, but I haul a lot of stuff and they are chipped in some places. Plus, this would cost just $60. It would cost $350 for the real deal.
Fresh paint: Moe talked me into the bowling-ball paint job since I'm not repainting my car the same color. And I'm going for the jamming this time, so I'm looking at spending about $15,000 for the new exterior.
Plates: My license plates already cost me $277, so I can't see paying for vanity plates even in my dreams. But I would like a "Lady Jay" chrome tag replacing "Jimmy" on both ends of the car, like Reggie Evans' "Joker." That's about $100 a letter.
Grand total: About $77,850 (Sorry Jimmy, I'd rather buy a house).
