TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — For a moment, it appeared North Carolina was going to blow a big lead at Florida State for a second straight season.
The illusion didn't last for more than a moment.
"It wasn't pretty, but we'll take it anyway," North Carolina coach Roy Williams said after the second-ranked Tar Heels finished fast yesterday for an 81-60 victory.
Williams was miffed after North Carolina (19-2 overall, 8-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) allowed the Seminoles (11-11, 3-6) to score the last nine points of the first half to cut the Tar Heels' lead to 38-29.
"I was very disappointed in their aggressiveness," Williams said of his players. "I told them Florida State was more aggressive the last five minutes of that first half and that's what happened last year."
Last season, North Carolina was ranked No. 7, built a 24-point first-half lead and wound up losing 90-81 in overtime.
Williams declined to call a timeout as the Tar Heels' lead eroded early in the second half yesterday. Florida State was behind 49-48 with 14:16 left, but the Tar Heels used a 25-6 run to take control.
Rashad McCants of North Carolina scored a game-high 16 points. Raymond Felton had 14 points, and Sean May and freshman Marvin Williams of Bremerton added 13 points each.
Williams, who played 29 minutes, tied May as the game's top rebounder with eight.
Williams, listed at 6 feet 9 and 230 pounds, dunked over 6-10, 250-pound Alexander Johnson despite being fouled and completed the three-point play with a free throw during a 16-2 run in the first half.
"I didn't know he was going to jump that high," Johnson said of Williams. "Really, I thought I was going to block him. But he came in more aggressive than I did. He caught me playing soft."
