Small colleges: Seattle U. men stop St. Martin's in the end

The Seattle University men took their first lead with eight seconds to play, then hung on to beat Saint Martin's 77-75 last night in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action at the Connolly Center.

The Redhawks (8-10, 3-6 GNAC), who have won three of their past four games, trailed by as many as 13 in the second half. SU tied the score with 10:59 to go, but the Saints (8-10, 5-4) responded with a 13-3 run for a 64-54 lead with 7:23 to go.

The Redhawks took the lead, 76-75, when Bim Makinde made a free throw to complete a three-point play. SMC's Jabbar Gray was called for charging on the ensuing possession with three seconds to play. SU's Ryan Webb was then fouled trying to inbound the ball and made one of two free throws to seal the win.

Makinde led the Redhawks with 22 points.

Other men's games

No. 8 Seattle Pacific 79, at Humboldt State 57

Center Jason Chivers had a game-high 26 points and 15 rebounds as the Falcons (15-4, 7-2 GNAC) routed the Lumberjacks (12-6, 4-5), getting their first win at HSU since 2001.

Tony Binetti scored 16 points and Jordan Lee added 15 as the Falcons recorded their fifth win in the past six games.

Western Washington 79, at Western Oregon 66

Guard Ryan Diggs scored 20 points for the Vikings (14-4, 6-3 GNAC), who never trailed in snapping a three-game road losing streak.

Center Evan Kieling led the Wolves (11-7, 5-4) with 27 points.

At Northwest Nazarene 76, Central Washington 63

The Wildcats (8-10, 4-5 GNAC) started the game with an 11-1 run, but finished with their second straight loss. NNU (9-9, 3-6) went on a 10-0 run to tie the score and led 32-29 at halftime.

Derek Groth led the Wildcats with 18 points.

At Northwest U. 53, Southern Oregon 51

Patrick Hillis' 8-foot jumper in the lane with two seconds left lifted the Eagles (15-9, 7-5 Cascade Conference) to a come-from-behind win over 10th-ranked Southern Oregon (13-8, 10-3).

At Puget Sound 105, Pacific 71

Aubrey Shelton went 9 of 9 from the floor and 6 of 6 from the free-throw line for 24 points to lead the Loggers (13-3, 7-1 Northwest Conference) over the Boxers (2-14, 1-7).

Women's games

No. 2 Seattle Pacific 61, at Seattle U. 47

The Falcons (17-1, 9-0 GNAC) scored a season low in points but still managed a win against the Redhawks (8-10, 3-6).

SPU (17-1, 9-0 GNAC) led 38-25 at the half but scored just 23 points the rest of the way. The Falcons held SU to 22 points in the second half as they picked up their 51st straight conference win.

At No. 17 Western Washington 84, Central Washington 68

Courtney Clapp scored a game-high 22 points and Tina Donahue added 19 for the Vikings (16-2, 8-1 GNAC), who rallied from a 39-36 halftime deficit.

Hanna Hull led the Wildcats (11-7, 4-5) with 16 points.

At Northwest U. 84, Southern Oregon 81 (OT)

The Eagles (8-16, 3-10 Cascade Conference) snapped a 10-game losing streak with the win over the Raiders (3-21, 2-11). The Eagles led by 13 with 11 minutes remaining, but the Raiders went on a 20-1 run over the next four minutes to take control.

Northwest, down three with 16 seconds left, forced overtime as freshman Cassie Snyder hit a three-pointer.

At Puget Sound 69, Pacific 50

Senior Lindsay May scored 23 points and pulled down 11 boards to lead the Loggers (13-4, 4-4 Northwest Conference) over the Boxers (5-12, 1-7).

At Whitman 69, Willamette 57

Lizzy Washburn had a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds for the Missionaries (9-8, 4-4 NWC).
