KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Quarterback Trent Green took most of the snaps in yesterday's Kansas City practice and is likely to start for the Chiefs tomorrow at Oakland.

Green had been held out of practice all week because of sore ribs and after bruising his hip in last weekend's 34-31 loss to San Diego.

Coach Dick Vermeil said Green told him he felt good and there was no reason he could not play. Vermeil said his final decision on whether to start Green or backup Todd Collins would be made today.

Safeties Jerome Woods and Greg Wesley, linebacker Monty Beisel and defensive end Vonnie Holliday will miss the game for Kansas City (3-8).

QB Pennington to play for Jets against Texans

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — Quarterback Chad Pennington of the New York Jets will start tomorrow against the Houston Texans after sitting out the last three games with a strained right rotator cuff.

Jets coach Herman Edwards made the move official yesterday, though it comes as little surprise. Pennington was listed a questionable all week, but he practiced with the first-team offense and took the majority of snaps with the starters.

The biggest concern for Edwards was getting Pennington into game shape. Pennington has had no setbacks with his shoulder, and no pain or discomfort after three straight days of practice.

"I'm excited about playing with my teammates on Sunday," Pennington said in a statement. "I feel confident that I can help the team compete. My shoulder is no longer a concern."

Pennington got hurt Nov. 7 against Buffalo after a scramble. The Jets (8-3) went 2-1 without him, winning with backup Quincy Carter and staying in the playoff race. But the offense never got in a groove with Carter, scoring two touchdowns in the last two games.

Notes

• The Jacksonville Jaguars signed rookie defensive tackle Anthony Maddox from the practice and waived injured return man Jermaine Lewis.

Coach Jack Del Rio said Maddox likely will see action tomorrow against Pittsburgh. Defensive end Rob Meier was placed on injured reserve this week after breaking his leg.

• New England signed offensive lineman Marques Sullivan, who was waived Tuesday by the New York Giants, and waived receiver Kevin Kasper. Sullivan spent his first three seasons in Buffalo.
