Leigh Swanson, a 6-foot-8 senior at Mountlake Terrace, is among three players from the Seattle area who have signed letters of intent to play basketball for the Seattle University men's team. Adam Moore, a 6-6 forward from Everett, and David White, a 6-11 former Highline High School player, also will join the Redhawks, coach Joe Callero announced yesterday. "At this point, this is the deepest frontcourt we have recruited," Callero said. "We are set for a couple of years. We'll look to add one more player in the spring, but the foundation is set for years to come." Swanson, who averaged 10.9 points per game as a junior at Mountlake Terrace, was rated as one of the top 20 power forwards and top 100 high-school seniors on the West Coast by the Gerry Freitas Hoop Review.
Moore attended Southern Oregon University last school year but did not play basketball. He will play for Everett Community College this season. Moore will have three years of eligibility remaining at Seattle University. White, 24, played at Highline High School and one season at Bellevue CC before going to Shanghai, China for four years to play basketball. White will play at Bellevue CC this season and have two years of eligibility with the Redhawks. Everett golfer signs with Idaho Everett High School senior Jacob Koppenberg has signed a letter of intent to play golf for Idaho. Koppenberg won the 2004 Frank Rodia Memorial tournament as well as the Washington Junior Golf Association District I championship. He was a member of the Washington Hogan Cup Team. "I feel that Jacob will have an immediate impact on our team next year and I look forward to adding him to our lineup," Idaho coach Brad Rickel said.
The Idaho women's golf team already includes Renee Skidmore, who played for Everett High School two years ago. Inglemoor golfer chooses Vanderbilt Inglemoor High School senior Tyler Matthews has signed a letter of intent to play golf for Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn. Matthews has four top-10 finishes in national tournaments in the past year, including a sixth-place finish in the AJGA Heather Farr Classic. In high school, he won the KingCo 4A District championship, shooting a 5-under par 71-68 to win by two strokes. Matthews chose Vanderbilt after also considering Tulane, California and Duke. De La Salle making football comeback De La Salle's football team has recovered nicely from its season-opening, 39-20 loss to Bellevue at Quest Field. The Spartans from Concord, Calif., have won three in a row, four of their past five and this week are rated No. 1 in the Bay Area rankings compiled by the San Francisco Chronicle with a 5-3-2 record.
